What is it?

A first-of-its-kind program that brings a multilingual team of volunteer lawyers from around the world to offer free and informal consultations to people living with and affected by HIV, as well as service providers, activists, and advocates. We debuted the program at the 2008 International AIDS Conference in Mexico City and repeated it with great success at the 2016 International AIDS Conference in Durban, South Africa, and the 2017 International Conference on AIDS and STIs in Africa in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire.

Why?

For many people facing a problem, even knowing whether the issue could have a legal solution often requires a conversation with a legal professional that is financially out of reach. The goal of the Legal Consultation Center is to close that gap, and provide an initial informal conversation with a lawyer, which gives individuals the knowledge and confidence to start addressing their issue upon their return home.

How does it work?

Simply show up at our booth in the Global Village and ask to meet with the next available volunteer. In a private, confidential conversation, you'll be able to ask vital questions like: Is my issue a legal one? Does it have a potential legal remedy? Is going to court my only option?

When?

The Legal Consultation Center will be open throughout the AIDS 2018 conference.

  • From 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Thursday, July 23rd to 26th
  • From 9 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Friday, July 27
